Action for Sight 2016: Safeguarding kids’ eye sight and future
To help raise awareness of blindness and visual impairment, the World Health Organization has designated the second Thursday of every October as being World Sight Day (WSD), which falls on Thursday October 13 in 2016.
In the run up to each year’s WSD, Orbis Macau hosts an annual fundraising campaign called Action for Sight (AFS). This year, Orbis aims to arouse awareness amongst parents, teachers and donors of the importance of maintaining children’s healthy eyesight in ensuring their brighter future. By participating into ‘AFS2016’, you not only safeguard the vision of children in Macau, but also restore the sight of needy children over the world by supporting Orbis’s pediatric sight-saving missions worldwide.
It’s essential to safeguard kids’ eye sight!
As around 80% of a child’s knowledge is acquired visually, impaired sight can be a huge stumbling block to his or her learning.
Because children’s bodies and minds are developing every day, it is vital to detect and treat eye problems within the Golden Treatment Window (generally before the age of 8). Failure to do so will make it almost impossible to save the kids’ sight and may even result in blindness.
Not only hampering a child’s vision, but also hindering his or her successful physical and mental development, the impacts of visual impairment are far-reaching. For instance, strabismus in one eye may result in amblyopia in the other. Visual impairment may also cause scoliosis (abnormal twisting of the spine) because affected youngsters must constantly twist their head sideways to see things properly. Often, younger patients of this condition also0 suffer from low self-esteem due to their unnatural appearance.
Unfortunately, far too many children are unable to vocalize their sight problems explicitly. As a result, responsibility for safeguarding youngsters’ eye health falls to parents and teachers who must then take an active role in monitoring their kids’ visual problems before treatment becomes impossible.
It’s easy to safeguard kids’ eye sight!
Parents and teachers can perform some simple steps for preliminary screenings of youngsters’ eye health. If doubtful about anything, always contact an ophthalmologist to arrange a comprehensive eye exam. Nevertheless, always ensure your kids receive regular comprehensive eye exams regardless of whether you have suspicions or not.
Orbis needs your help to safeguard kids’ eye sight!
Tragically, there are some 1,400,000 blind and 19,000,000 visually impaired children worldwide, whose sight loss has caused them to miss out on a normal childhood or even take proper care of themselves. Most sufferers live in developing countries whose hopelessly underfunded and underequipped medical infrastructures mean kids’ missing the Golden Time for Treatment and all too often never seeing our world or their parents’ loving faces again.
In order to eradicate these easily avoidable tragedies, Orbis has been assisting developing countries through various sight saving initiatives, in order to eliminate preventable blindness and make every boy or girl enjoy healthy eyesight and a carefree childhood.
Some examples of our pediatric sight-saving works:
- In Ethiopia, our volunteers are helping schools to establish School Eye Clubs and promoting eye-care messages in the form of singing and dancing lessons which local children love.
- In India, we have published a user-friendly Vision Screening Handbook teachers can refer to whenever necessary.
In some rural areas, we are enabling teachers and community staff to draw upon local resources and raw tools to perform eye screening for children.
